Ideas?

Now that we have our approval from China it's time to start gathering items to send in Asher's care package. Only thing is, we're not exactly sure what to send him!
It's a little different sending something to a seven year old than it was when we sent care packages to Esther, at age 2 1/2 and Emma at age 18 months. Ian thinks we should just send Asher a gameboy, but I think that will have to wait until we go to China! He then suggested a laser gun...so he hasn't been much of a help!!
I know we'll definitely be sending a photo album so I've got to start working on that. Other idea's I've been thinking about are a stuffed animal, matchbox cars, coloring books, lego's and a Mickey Mouse shirt or hat. (Mickey Mouse is pretty universal) Of course I don't want to send too much because we don't even know if the orphanage will let him keep it. But we also want to send enough of something (say 30 matchbox cars, or enough candy) so the other children don't get jealous. And it all needs to be small because Jennifer from Cannon Fishbowl has volunteered take it over for us when she adopts her daughter Sophie, from Asher's orphanage. We really hope she travels next month!! =)
Any other idea's? He's seven years old.

My brother Daniel is 7 and he loves bionicles. 7 year old boys also usually love building toys- maybe a small lego kit taht makes something neat?

Hmm...

I hope you don't mind my asking, but do you own a camcorder or know somebody who does? The reason I ask is that it might be a good idea to send him a DVD introducing yourselves, where you live, etc. and then ask someone to translate what is said into Mandarin. (The latter you don't even have to put in the movie, just write on paper.) I know it sounds complex, but take my word for it, it isn't. (Somebody at the agency MUST speak Chinese!)

As for anything else, if this idea appeals to you I would be happy to help-I have a friend who adopted her daughter from China a few years back and I have always had a soft spot for kids like these! Just give me an email at shadowcat60@mac.com.

I think you nailed it! Legos, coloring books, crayons, cars... one other thing that my friend's 7 year old absolutely loves is Magnetix. There are small pieces so I am not sure how this will go over... but maybe something you can bring along? Also what about Play-Doh? Shoot... I still like playing with that! lol

Trying to think light and easy to pack. What about an inflatable beachball? Frisbee? Hacky-sack type toy? Bubbles?

What fun to be planning a care package for your little brother!

Oh how exciting, well I asked the kids and the boys said "game boy". You are right to wait till Asher is home. After they thought about it colors and coloring books came in next.

This is a little late, but...

I'm studying to be a teacher. I spent May and June of 2006 in a grade one/two split class. The children were 6, 7, and 8. The boys were obsessed with: cars, lego, PUZZLES, tennis balls, mini hockey sticks, cool sunglasses, dinosaurs, pencil crayons, and baseball hats. Hope this helps!
