What started out as the adoption journey soon turned into the adoption trip to bring him home and now the adventure through the continuing life of an 8 year old little boy, after the adoption. Asher was born on November 28, 1999 in northeast China. He is from the small town of Dandong, located just across the river from North Korea. When he was two weeks old, his biological parents abandoned him in front of a local factory. The gaping hole between his nose and mouth -known as a cleft lip- left his parents unable to care for him. He was taken to the nearby orphanage and given the name Fu Peng, and they hoped he would grow up to be a happy child. He later received surgery for his cleft lip and palate and in 2004 his file was sent to the Adoption Affairs Bureau. It wasn't until November 2006 when our family spotted his file and the family he was lacking. It didn't take long for us to realize the empty spot in our family belonged to him. In August 2007, we traveled to China on our third adoption adventure to bring Peng, or Asher Kyle Fupeng home to our family. This blog not only chronicles the journey to and from China, but also the new journey of adapting to life in a family. Through Asher we have further learned what patience, love, perseverance and joy truly means. Asher, means happy.
Our family is literally a tribe, made up of many nations including America, Chile and China. My name is Sera, I'm 18, a senior in high school and heading off to college in the fall. I am the oldest of seven children in my family, including Elena (16), Kayla (13), Ian (10), Asher (8), Esther (5) and Emma (5). Our youngest three were adopted from China in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Of course, can't forget my parents.. Claudio & Nancy, we completely outnumber them. Our life is crazy and always busy, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Welcome to life in the Tribe of Nine!
